NASHUA, NH (June 1, 2002)With software and services from RemoteWorks and the new Hughes Network satellite program, even retail chains with less than 200 stores can use the latest in advanced communications to link remote locations.
,
Currently, smaller retail chains are bound to slow and unreliable dial-up connections or expensive mix and match combinations of dial-up and DSL. Now, thanks to the Hughes SPACEWORKS program and RemoteWorks, these chains can enjoy satellite communications with "fat pipe" bandwidth at a reasonable expense.
"A typical polling session, where the remote store sends data about the day's transactions back to HQ, can take up to 45 minutes using dial up," explained Chris Barrett, President of RemoteWorks in Nashua. "That same file transfer could occur in 6 minutes with the satellite dish hook-up."
But speeding up mundane data transfers is just the beginning, Barrett pointed out. "With the Hughes satellite connection, you have the potential for an interactive link between all your stores, headquarters, and the rest of the web. You can use this connection for remote training, in-store demos, fast credit card approvals, software and systems updates…the possibilities are virtually unlimited."
"If you were operating a restaurant chain, for example, your POS system could poll for daily sales information, track inventory and even distribute price and menu changes," Barrett added. "Another application would appeal to stores that process credit, debit and loyalty transactions. By centralizing these transactions at headquarters in a kind of central credit switch, the savings could be tremendous."
